Liberal

We have been informed that the Liberal party do not have an ‘written statement in a Liberal Party policy platform on uranium mining or the nuclear industry.

On Uranium mining:

In 2008 when the Liberal Party formed Government with the National Party the Cabinet lifted the ban on uranium mining that was in place from the Labor Government. Since then the Liberal Government have promoted uranium mining, have used tax payers money to emply new staff in Government departments to regulate uranium exploration and have used ‘Royalties for Regions’ money to fund uranium exploration projects in the Goldfields, the Pilbara and the Kimberley.

On Nuclear Power:

We are told that the Liberal Government ‘does not envisage a need for nuclear power’ in WA and the Premier has stated in the media that our current infrastructure is too small for nuclear power.

However there are some sitting members of the Liberal Party who have actively promoted nuclear power in Australia and more specifically in the Pilbara.

On Nuclear Waste:

In 1999 the Liberal Government enacted the West Australian Waste Storage and Transportation (Prohibition Act) which prohibits the transport and storage of nuclear waste in WA.

WA Liberal Candidates for the 2013 State Election: When we asked candidates about their position on uranium mining this was their response…  many responded that their position does not differ from the Liberal party position – please note that the Liberal party don’t have a written position on this issue.
